Alice Shepherd is working the emergency room when hundreds of injured people pour in needing help. With no electricity, resources are limited - once the back up generators fail, the hospital will not be able to handle the influx of patients being brought in, guaranteeing that all hell will break loose.

Everyone is speculating and panicking. No one knows what really happened. The only thing everyone can agree on is their simple, convenient, technological world is gone. Everyone is left to fight - kill or be killed. Survive or die.

Reviews:

  • I love books like this and this one starts off with a great idea…The story is great. The action scenes are good. But you don't get attached to anyone in the book. You don't learn much about them just that they are surviving this EMP attack…Scott Ellis did a wonderful job reading this and I will listen to future works by him.

  • The narrator. on the other hand, is the reason I think I got so far into the story and kept listening. I've heard him in other books and yes he was better, but I won't count this one against him and I would listen to him again.

  • Absolutely LOVED this book!!! Got hooked right away and could not stop listening!!! The narrator, Scott Ellis was OUTSTANDING and made it SO EASY for me to have a picture of all the characters and really feel the intensity of the book!

Mackenzie August Series, Book 2

Local attorney and femme fatale Ronnie Summers knocks on Mackenzie's door with a case he can't resist, even though he probably should. Her secrets cast him into the deep end, both professionally and romantically, and soon he finds himself mingling with the mafioso.

Reviews:

  • This is a well crafted story with a great assortment of characters. The Narrator is able to create a wide variety of characters which makes the Book more entertaining.

  • The Second Secret is a great next installment in the Mackenzie August series. Mackenzie takes on Ronnie's(his love interest from the first novel) father as a client… This is a very fun and a great summer read, all the great characters from the first book are back as well as the humor and entertainment. August is funny and irreverent but serious when he needs to be and he gets the job done... The narration by Scott Ellis is great again and he really breaths life into the characters and makes this book breeze by. If you enjoyed the first book I would definitely recommend this as it is another very enjoyable book.

Murder on Moloka'i

Surfing Detective Mystery Series, Book 1

When Boston heiress Adrienne Ridgely strides into his Honolulu office, Surfing Detective Kai Cooke likes what he sees but doubts what he hears. Adrienne's sister, environmental activist Sara Ridgely-Parke, plunged to her death from a mule on Molokai - the first fatal incident on the soaring cliffs above Kalaupapa's fabled leper colony.

Murder, cries Adrienne, perpetrated by Sara's ex-husband, developer J. Gregory Parke. Cooke flies to Molokai, tracking tantalizing leads to an unlikely murder in which, despite himself, he starts to believe.

Was the mule prodded or spooked or drugged? Did Parke do it for vengeance, or Adrienne for an inheritance, as Parke alleges?

Soon, Kai uncovers a motive more noxious than either of these, entangling him in the shady dealings of big-time developers, corrupt politicians, and underworld thugs. As he hops from island to island seeking a pivotal clue, the clock ticks down on more than the PI’s case or even his own life. The future of Molokai itself is at stake.

Reviews:

  • This is the third book in this series and is as good as the first two. Mackenzie is hired to find out who's robbing from the rich in an affluent neighborhood… I'm excited for the next book to be released on audible. Scott Ellis is perfect as narrator for this series, I was thrilled to find he narrates all I've listened to so far.

  • As usual, the story is mixed with an array of characters and excellent narration. The plot continues to surprise you making want to keep driving around just to keep the book going. The humor of Mackenzie August is incredible and had me laughing out loud several times. Scott does an incredible job. I can't wait for the next book!

  • This mystery is just as humorous and quirky as the previous books in this series... The characters are great, though, and Scott Ellis has really made these characters his. His performance is outstanding. The next book in the series was previewed at the end of this one and I can't wait to review it.

Summoned to the Honolulu hilltop mansion of radio pitchman Barry Buckingham, presumably to trace his missing wife, the Surfing Detective is in for the letdown of his career. Kai Cook is hired to track another lost family member. A dog.

Despite his qualms, Kai would seem a natural for the case, since the golden retriever named Kula is a famous surfing dog. Yet the PI knows nothing about finding missing pets. But he does know where to find help - Maile Barnes, an ex-K9 cop and kindred spirit with the keys to unlock the dark underworld of animal theft in the islands.

Then, a questionable tip takes Kai to a late-night rendezvous, his tipster winds up dead, and the detective himself becomes a suspect. The PI tracks the illusive retriever from Oahu to the Big Island to Maui, but the killer is one step ahead - other players linked to the dog’s disappearance keep turning up dead.

Is a ghost from Barry Buckingham's past behind the murders? Or is Kai's client just a misunderstood man with a lost pet? To solve this third case in the Surfing Detective series, Kai Cooke must do what he never does - take on a partner. Teaming up with the headstrong K9 cop is his only shot to liberate the famous surfing dog, who is somehow always at the center of this mystery.

Reviews:

  • Mackenzie is such a smart ass that he made me laugh out loud a couple times. Alan Lee obviously has a great sense of humor!… Mackenzie is so calm and joking at inappropriate times it catches me off guard… The story was good and held my attention all the way through, building up to a good ending. Scott Ellis was excellent. He gave an impressive performance with all the different voices for the various characters…

  • This mystery is just as humorous and quirky as the previous books in this series... The characters are great, though, and Scott Ellis has really made these characters his. His performance is outstanding…

  • Witty, well-written, held my attention throughout! Can't wait for another book! Scott Ellis did a great job narrating and bringing the characters to life!...

  • Private detective Mackenzie August navigates his way through drug dealers and sex workers, plus their gang bosses, with humour and panache well beyond this mere mortal's imagination…Why has it taken me so long to discover Alan Lee?… And in Scott Ellis, Mackenzie has the perfect voice as narrator: always smooth, a pleasure to listen to, with fine intonation, individual and appropriate voicings and pace perfect. Mr.Ellis becomes August, the PI in an excellent performance… Thank you so much. I loved it and am now looking to embark on a catch up of the earlier books in the series. For anyone who enjoys the whole private detective genre, especially those with great writing, witty dialogue, excellent and compelling scenarios, fabulous characters who, nevertheless seem to ring true and, in audio, superb narration - look no further. This is the book for you.

The Sleeping God

Blood-mottled walls mark a gory crime scene without a body, and a shocked witness tells an impossible story–that’s what awaits Conrad Blake, a Boston private detective, when he answers a desperate midnight call.

Amidst the evidence, he uncovers a peculiar object of antiquity and the passport of the victim, a promising anthropologist. But murder is only the tip of the iceberg. Hanging Ten in Paris Trilogy:

Hanging Ten in Paris, Another Problem in Paris, Murder at Makapu'u

Everyone’s favorite surfing detective, Kai Cooke, is back..in three cases in exotic locales half a world apart:

In Hanging Ten in Paris, Kai investigates the apparent suicide of surfer and study-abroad student Ryan Song, found hanging in his room in Paris. With scant knowledge of French or France, Kai tries to piece together what happened in the city of lights, without ever leaving the islands. He interviews a half dozen students—including the surfer's unrequited love Marie Ho--and their professor, and finds that while their stories tally none rings of the truth. Did Ryan really hang himself? Or did some dark motive among them cause his death?

In Another Problem in Paris when Marie Ho fails to return from her semester abroad Kai is hired by her stepfather, psychiatrist Gordon Grimes, to fly to Paris and hand her a sealed envelope. The PI tracks her through Paris neighborhoods, guided by an old flame French professor, and finds Marie living with her boyfriend and another woman. Meanwhile Kai himself is being tracked. When he delivers the envelope Marie’s apparent menage a trois is violently torn asunder. Kai suspects the Frenchmen who have been following him. And behind them someone much closer to home.

In Murder at Makapu'u, Kai investigates the fatal cliff-side plunge of philanthropist Beatrice Ho, whose death looks suspiciously un-accidental. Kai flies to Molokai to check on the alibis of her second husband, the PI's former client Dr. Grimes. When those alibis raise questions Grimes; his stepdaughter confronts him and they face off on the cliff from which he claims his wife jumped. Did Grimes push her? Kai is not so sure. Then he finds a final piece of evidence that appears to clinch the case. But not the case he expected.

Disappearance of Wiley Hood

What would you do if you discovered that you were disappearing?

Not physically, but a piece at a time: all tangible evidence that you exist as a person—beginning with your driver's license, bank accounts and your birth certificate...and soon you are a loose thread, being pulled from the fabric of reality—into the twilight of your physical existence.

This is what happens to Wiley Hood, a 25-year-old artist-turned business executive who still struggles with his older brother’s suicide. Creatively blocked for a year since Nick's death, Wiley is suddenly able to paint again—and then, his life begins to unravel and vanish around him. Besieged by visions and nightmares, Wiley is forced to consider the possibility that he has lost his mind...because that is less frightening than the notion that the phenomenon—or whatever awaits him at the end of it—is real.

Frequently hilarious and unsettling—and sometimes frightening—THE DISAPPEARANCE OF WILEY HOOD is a dizzying psychological fantasy in the spirit of The Twilight Zone. It is a trip you will never forget.

A CAT’S CRADLE OF CRIME, A DOODLE

TO DIE FOR, AND A GEM OF A COZY…

Two murders before lunch is a pretty bad day in anybody’s schedule, but when your sister’s a suspect, you just want to howl at the moon. Thankfully, that would hardly be noticeable in Barkview, the dog-friendliest town in America, where it’s starting to look as if humans are the endangered species.

Cat Wright (wrong name, wrong pet preference for Barkview) has barely had time to regret a good deed that just got punished when her younger sister Lani takes time out from performing mouth-to-mouth on an unconscious friend to give her an emergency call.

First murder first—Cat’s just learned she stirred up a dogfight when she nominated a distinguished female ancestor for the Aviation Hall of Fame. But here’s the rub—nominees have to be investigated and as a result, Barkview’s beloved hometown heroine now stands accused of the murder of a notorious rumrunner.

To add more intrigue, Cat’s ancestor’s also accused of stealing the Douglas Diamond, the fabled lost treasure of Barkview, to finance her flying adventures. That’s Page One news in this town and Cat feels terrible about accidentally tarnishing a hero’s legacy.

She’s just read the headline when she gets the call from Lani, who in short order is accused of killing Peter Gallardo, her friend and prof who, Cat’s starting to see, was probably Lani’s boy friend as well. And wouldn’t you know, Peter may have been one of many on a quest to find the famous gem.

A regular cat’s cradle of crime! But this is Barkview and so the co-star, as always in a Cat Wright mystery, is an irresistible pooch, in this case G-Paw, a fuzzy doofus of a golden doodle who’ll keep you laughing chapter after chapter—and who just about converts Cat to the canine side.

Add a few ancient diaries, plus Cat’s persistent investigative style, and soon author Wilson’s woven these seemingly disparate strands into a complex village puzzle mystery wrapped up (thanks mostly to G-Paw) in a comic confection inside a delicious contemporary cozy.

Fans of animal cozies will love the mix of humor and intricate plotting—and they’ll go nuts for G-Paw.

After the suspect put four bullets in her, she decided to stay in Ottawa and open her own detective agency. One morning, the body of a British diplomat is found at her office door. As the risks to her life and career multiply and bodies begin to pile up, Somerset enlists her friends: Duchess “Keys” Brown, a vivacious Jamaican computer guru; Joe Manning, a martial arts expert; and Charles Stroud, her old Scotland Yard partner.
