Mystery Babylon: When Jerusalem Embraces the Antichrist: An Exposition of Revelation 18 and 19

“And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 17:18) Which city is this that reigns over all the kings of the earth? Rome? New York? Mecca? There are over 90 characteristics given in the book of Revelation about the city of Mystery Babylon, and none of these three cities meets all of the criteria. But there is one city that does…or should I say will. Too often people look for the city of Mystery Babylon in history, or in their present day, as opposed to what the scriptures say we will see in the future. The Bible tells us exactly which city will be the capital city of the Antichrist in the last days, it tells us the city that will promote the Antichrist's worship to the rest of the world, and the city in which the Antichrist will institute the greatest persecution of all time. That city is Jerusalem. The city of Mystery Babylon will be Jerusalem when it embraces the Antichrist as if he was their long awaited Messiah. The reason that she is referred to as a “harlot” is the same reason she was referred to as a harlot hundreds of times in scripture, because she is committing spiritual adultery. “How is the faithful city become an harlot!" (Isaiah 1:21a) Consider just a few similarities between Mystery Babylon and Jerusalem:

1. Mystery Babylon is said to kill the prophets in Revelation 18:24. Yet the only city that has ever been recorded as killing the prophets is Jerusalem: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets....” (Matthew 23:37)

2. The Bible says that Mystery Babylon will be held accountable for all the righteous blood shed on the earth.

Yet Jesus said the exact same thing about Jerusalem: “That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth....” (Mat 23:35a) This is just scratching the surface. In the last days the Antichrist will seek to convince the Jews that their Messiah has finally come, he will seek to make them, and the rest of the world think that the kingdom age has begun. This is the only view of Mystery Babylon that can withstand a meticulous verse-by-verse examination. *Find out about the "seven hills" and why the bible refers to them as "kings" in almost every bible translation.

Civil War Experiences of a German Emigrant

In this stirring memoir, Joseph Ruff recounts his experiences during the first year of his four years of service in the Union Army, Company D of the 12th Michigan Regiment. It was, as he describes, “[B]y far the most severe year of our service...a year of battles, severe marches, constant duties, privations, illness, and death.”

Beginning as a green new recruit with no fanfare, no uniform, and only the bare necessities, Joseph became a seasoned soldier, at times living by his wits and off the land. Joseph recounts, in harrowing detail, his confrontations with the enemy and numerous narrow escapes. There was more than one occasion when Joseph felt that divine providence had not only saved him personally, but had guided the war, as well.

One of the most important battles of the war, the Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6 of that first year. Joseph writes his harrowing account of the experience, beginning with a skirmish on the night of April 5, when he and 200 soldiers undertook a scouting expedition, little knowing that a force of 42,000 Confederate men was lying in wait prepared to attack next day.

Fortunately, Joseph and his squad saw an outlying sentry, saving them from blundering into the entire enemy camp. Even so, they barely escaped through a barrage of bullets and returned to camp, carrying their wounded. Thus, they were able to deliver a warning to the Union camp, so timely it is thought to have affected the course of the war. Had the Union Army been caught unawares and defeated at Shiloh, it could have handed the Confederacy a victory.
